Paul Wesley gets his wish when “The Vampire Diaries” returns for its third season Thursday. The actor, who has played the “good” vampire Stefan Salvatore on the CW series, goes to the dark side.
“I’ve been asking for two years,” Wesley said at San Diego Comic-Con. “I think they just wanted to shut me up.”
At the end of Season 2, Stefan made a deal with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), a powerful original vampire: Stefan would accompany the evil Klaus on a worldwide bloodsucking spree if Klaus spared the life of his human girlfriend, Elena (Nina Dobrev). As the new season opens, Stefan and Klaus has skipped town, leaving Elena to celebrate her 18th birthday with Stefan’s brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who also loves Elena.
The situation leaves Damon, who isn’t the nicest guy in the world of undead beings, “stuck in the role he hates the most, which is, “I have to be the hero, this blows,” executive producer Julie Plec said.
It’s a big change-up for the two characters and the actors who play them. But Wesley, for one, is excited about the possibilities for Stefan, who becomes a feared “ripper” as he drinks more human blood straight from the tap, so to speak.
“I think he’s going to become a guy that we¹ve never seen,” he said. “For a guy that we all loved who was so noble and so heroic, I think for him to become literally the antithesis of that is going to be kind of shocking [for viewers].”
It’s also fun to play a baddie, he said.
“It’s like being drunk and making a fool out of yourself [without worrying about the consequences],” he said.
“It’s a little easier. I hate to say it, but I mean, you¹re not crying all the time.”

During the long, lonely summer without new “Vampire Diaries” to watch, we may have revisited some Season 1 episodes to help pass the time. (Whatever. Shut up. We can quit any time we want! We only had a couple. We barely inhaled.)
The most jarring differences between Mystic Falls now and Mystic Falls then are Tyler and Caroline — and we’re not just talking about their transformations into a werewolf and a vampire, respectively. Back then, Caroline was insecure and looking for love in all the wrong places, and Tyler’s only relationship — with Vicki — drove her right into the arms of Jeremy.
“He was an a-hole,” Michael Trevino agreed when we visited “The Vampire Diaries” set this week.
“A d-bag,” Candice Accola elaborated. For the record, they had just wrapped a day of filming episode 306, and all signs pointed to Tyler and Caroline being fully in-a-relationship. (We expect that their Facebook statuses have been updated, because Caroline is that type.)
Yep. Tyler/Caroline is so on. Forwood. Tyroline. Careler?
Don’t worry, though — Tyler won’t be giving Caroline the Vicki treatment. “Tyler is a changed man,” Trevino assures us. After losing his father, facing his werewolf side, and even taking a break from Mystic Falls, Tyler is more compassionate. “He grew. His maturity level is a lot higher than it was in our season 1 Tyler.”
As we’ve seen from the promo trailers, things get pretty hot between them pretty fast. That doesn’t mean it’s going to fizzle quickly though. Looks like this hookup might have some longevity.
“I would like it to last,” Trevino tells us. Of course, they’re teenagers, and they’ve got scary villains after them, so things may get complicated… especially when he transforms.
“There will be a transformation,” he says. “I don’t think it’s going to be as graphic as the first one, but there will be a transformation.”
We know Caroline likes to, you know, hold him through the pain, but after he nearly took out big bad Damon last season, we think she should keep her distance. If he bites her, it’s the end of the affair.
“If Tyler accidentally nipped Caroline, then she would die and he wouldn’t be gettin’ no nookie,” Accola teases. “A smart man would keep those fangs where they belong.”
We don’t want to be the ones to throw the wet blanket on the situation, but, uh… what about a certain busboy? “Let’s just say Caroline has obvious scenes with Tyler,” Accola says. “She also has scenes with Matt [Zach Roerig].”
“She’s a floozy,” Trevino says. “A floozy.”
Well. There you have it.
The good news: We’ll see a different side of the actor this season as Stefan hits the ripper road with Klaus (Joseph Morgan). ”In the first couple of episodes, there’s still a lot of one-foot-in, one-foot-out of this situation he’s in,” Wesley tells EW. “Something’s gonna happen that drastically changes that, and then at that point, he commits and doesn’t look back. Then he can really enjoy it. The truth is, I can be a dark guy like any other, but I love humor, and I love goofing off, and I love being silly, and playing a character that’s constantly burdened for years, it can be a little depressing after a while. To play a character who has absolutely no conscience, that literally felt like taking a load off my shoulders.”
How will we get our Stefan back? That’s a good question. “There’s gonna be a lot of killing. As far as Stefan is concerned, he can never go back to his old life. Imagine Stefan sitting in high school. Apart from the fact that I just look weird sitting in high school,” he laughs, “he’s murdered all these people. What do you think, we’re just gonna go hang out now? As far as he’s concerned, he’s moved on. He’s past it all.”

I’m pleased to present the first look at Joseph Morgan’s glammed up gallery shot!

Rocking an extremely slick suit, the Brit looks every inch the ravishing ravager who turned Mystic Falls upside down in season two, turning both the actor and the character into indispensable fan favorites!
And according to creator Kevin Williamson, Klaus is just getting started since he tells TheInsider.com fans should prepare themselves to meet more Originals in the months to come! “I love the mythology behind the family of Originals. I like that there are eight members — the husband, the matriarch, someone cheated and a hybrid was born. Klaus is the bastard child of this entire family that we haven’t met yet, so as long as the show continues to thrive, every single one of them will show up!”
Kat Graham (“Bonnie“), about the jaw-dropping reveal that what appear to be the ghosts of her boyfriend Jeremy’s dead girlfriends, Vicki and Anna, are appearing to him. What’s a witch to do?
IGN TV: Bonnie really got to step up at the end of Season 2.
Kat Graham: You know, you always wait for that moment as an actor. You feel like you can really showcase some cool stuff. They really gave me so many great things to work with and so much hard work to do. I was just so excited that they did that.
IGN: Things have been going pretty good with Jeremy and Bonnie – Well, when he wasn’t dying. But now you’ve got quite an issue to deal with, because it’s one thing when you have a tangible person to compete with, but you’ve got a couple of invisible girls out there.
Graham: I know, I know. If my boyfriend had a couple ex-girlfriends in the picture, I know that I would just lose my marbles. So I don’t know how Bonnie’s gonna handle it. Hopefully, she’s not as crazy as me.
IGN: From what we heard, Jeremy’s keeping things very close to the vest, and he’s not telling you.
Graham: Yeah, that’s not something you necessarily want to just wave a flag about. “Hey, by the way, I’m seeing my dead ex-girlfriend. What are you doing for lunch?” You know what I mean? [Laughs]
IGN: On the other hand, is it fun for you, in real life, to have those girls back on set?
Graham: Oh my gosh, yeah. Kayla Ewell is one of my closest friends, and Malese Jow is such an incredible person and artist. I just love that they’re really giving them a kind of an open door again to come back in.
IGN: What is Bonnie up to as the season opens?
Graham: I can’t really say, because I know that’s what everyone’s kind of waiting on and I really want it to be a surprise for the fans. But I will say that she really thinks everything is where it left off, I will say that. So any new revelations or anything, she’s completely unaware of.
IGN: This has been referred to as the “season of the originals” by your producers. Have you been intrigued to see the things that they’re putting in the script?
Graham: I am so intrigued! I’m like, “Where is this going!?” I’m so excited! I definitely want to see some stuff with Klaus, and Joseph Morgan gets to do his thing this season. And good for him!
IGN: Your show is so impressive to me as far as the twists, the turns, and going places you don’t expect it to. Is it the same for you working on it?
Graham: Every time I get a Kevin Williamson, Julie Plec, Caroline Dries script — any of our amazing writers — every time I get a script from them, I’m just like, “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Holy s**t, this is really happening!” Yes, I absolutely do. I literally sit on my bed and don’t get off it until I’ve read the script from page to page.
